A relaxed airway can collapse during sleep, producing soft tissue vibrations during breathing which result in snoring. Snoring research has shown that custom fabricated dental devices worn at night that move the lower jaw into a forward position, increase the space in the airway tube. Increasing the capacity of the airway and preventing soft tissue vibrations can help minimise or eliminate snoring.
Murray Turner Dental Surgeons have partnered with an ENT surgeon and Somnomed, a company specialising in Oral Appliances, to aid in the the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea.
The SomnoDent® is a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) that treats both snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), by advancing the lower jaw forward. It is a custom-made device consisting of upper and lower dental plates.
The SomnoDent® device, allows for full range of mouth opening and closing, which means you can talk or drink with device in position and close your lips. It does not impinge on tongue space and will fit wholly inside your mouth. The device is incrementally adjustable, forward and backward, allowing it to be adjusted to the optimum position for comfort and effective treatment. Most patients generally find that it only takes a couple of nights to adjust to wearing the device for a full night sleep.
